Domaine de la Pépière

France · Loire Valley

Legendary proprietor Marc Ollivier retired after the 2019 vintage and the transition of the estate to new, capable proprietors, Rémi Branger and Gwénaëlle Croix, is well on its way. Rémi, who started as an employee in 2006, became a partner in 2011, and Gwen, who switched careers to viticulture after working in the industrial sector, joined as a partner in 2014. Under their leadership, the estate has evolved, moving to organic viticulture (credited to Rémi) and biodynamics (credited to Gwen), with advancements in cellar techniques like longer sur-lies élevages and the development of cru bottlings for Clisson, Château-Thebaud, Monnières-Saint-Fiacre, and Gorges. The estate has a long history of bottling single-vineyard cuvées like "Clos des Briords" since 1988, which set it apart in the Muscadet region, where large-scale négociant operations often discourage such risk-taking despite the varied terroirs. Half of the estate's 42 hectares now fall within cru limits, but these wines represent a small, high-quality portion of the total production, undergoing extended aging on the lees, while the majority of grapes go into the entry-level "La Pépie" cuvée.
