Humus

Portugal · Lisboa

Humus Wines is a family-run estate located at Quinta do Paço in Alvorninha, within the Óbidos subregion of Lisboa. Founded by Rodrigo Filipe, a former civil engineer turned self-taught winemaker, the estate has been certified organic since 2007. Rodrigo cultivates approximately 9 hectares of vineyards on red clay and limestone soils, benefiting from the Atlantic's cooling influence. Embracing minimal intervention, the wines are produced without additives, often unfiltered, and some cuvées are made without added sulfites, showcasing the purity and character of native Portuguese grape varieties. The name of the estate refers to the dark organic material in soils, produced by the decomposition of vegetable or animal matter and essential to the fertility of the earth. Humus is de facto sign of healthy soils.
