Magoutes Vineyard

Greece · Macedonia

Magoutes Vineyard’s story began in the early 20th century when Dimitrios Diamantis’ grandfather hand-grafted vines of Xinomavro and rare local varieties like Moschomavro and Nigrikiotiko on family land in Siatista. As grape growing declined by the 1970s, most vineyards faded away. In the 1990s, the winery worked to revive these varieties, replanting 18 hectares on limestone/clay slopes at high altitudes. The first official bottling, a Xinomavro-Moschomavro blend, came in 2002. Dimitrios, along with partner George Papageorgiou, is also leading efforts to secure PDO status for Siatista, potentially making it one of Greece’s smallest PDOs. Their shared vision is to protect and promote the region’s rich viticultural heritage. Cultivation, it should be said, is organic and all of the work is done on a small scale. The climate of the area is superb for allowing a hands-off approach as environmental stresses, be they flora, fauna, or climatic, are minimal. The wine-making is low intervention with spontaneous fermentations and without the use of enzymes, clarifiers, or other invasive processes to honor and allow for the native characteristic of the specific terror and cultivars to show themselves.
