The Gindl family farm, rooted in mixed agriculture since 1807, has been transformed under Michael Gindl’s stewardship into a model of biodynamic self-sufficiency. Taking over in the early 2000s, Michael expanded the estate to integrate livestock, forestry, and viticulture into a holistic system aligned with Demeter standards, even breeding cattle, horses, sheep, and pigs to contribute to the farm’s balance. His vineyards are worked with horses, his barrels crafted from the farm’s own oak and acacia, and his wines made with the lightest possible touch: hand-harvested grapes, gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentations, no fining or filtration, and only minimal sulfur. Relentless in pursuit of authenticity yet guided by a philosophy of non-intervention, Michael sums up his approach simply: “I really try to do as little as possible – in fact, nothing!”
