San Ferdinando

Italy · Tuscany

San Ferdinando, situated in the hamlet of Civitella in Val di Chiana within the Chianti Colli Aretini zone southeast of Florence, benefits from an altitude and continental climate similar to Chianti Classico. The Grifoni family has owned the 62-hectare estate since 1850, with 10 hectares under vine, but it was fully restored and converted to organic farming in 2008. Winemaker and agronomist Simone Zucchetti oversees production with a focus on indigenous varieties—Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Pugnitello, and Vermentino—crafting wines that balance typicity, drinkability, and value. Though farmed beyond organic standards, the estate avoids certification, rejecting its bureaucratic inefficacy and the industrialization of certified wines. In the cellar, fermentations are spontaneous, wines are handled gently, and sulfur levels are kept well below organic limits. The result is a lineup of expressive, characterful “everyday” wines that deliver far more than everyday pleasure, marking San Ferdinando as one of the quiet standouts of the Italian portfolio.
