Sohm & Kracher is a collaboration between Austrian sommelier Aldo Sohm and winemaker Gerhard Kracher, born from a friendship forged in New York in 2004 and a shared passion for food, wine, and particularly dry Grüner Veltliner. Inspired by Aldo’s realization that true critique requires hands-on winemaking, the pair launched their project in 2009 with a clear vision: wines of balance and vitality, never heavy or unctuous, grown in the underestimated Weinviertel and on a limestone parcel in St. Georgen, Burgenland. Aldo brings his global perspective as Le Bernardin’s acclaimed wine director and one of the world’s top sommeliers, while Gerhard carries forward the Kracher family’s legacy of meticulous winemaking in Burgenland. Together, they focus solely on Grüner Veltliner, exploring its range from the crisp, peppery “Lion” to the textured, Chablis-like “St. Georg” and the age-worthy “Single Vineyard.” Their approach combines old vines, hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentations, and thoughtful élevage, resulting in wines that are reductive, precise, and capable of long aging, yet always true to their Austrian roots.
